5 Easy Ways to Reduce Screen Time and Increase Productivity for Adults

Knowingly or unknowingly, we all are overly exposed to screens. This can be a laptop, mobile, television, desktop, tablets, kindle or a gaming screen. On average, an adult is spending more than 10 hours a day in front of screens, which is quite alarming. It is hazardous to our health, social lives and productivity to spend this much time in front of the screen. Some screen time, like work, is unavoidable and those 8 hours that we spend at work are in front of the some type of screen for most of us.

For most people, the biggest productivity buster and screen time sucker is their cell phones or tablets.  We get sucked into looking at things on our phones and tablets for ‘just a sec’ which can turn into hours. By intentionally reducing your phone and tablet time and you will see an increase in productivity.

 Here are a few ways in which screen time can be intentionally limited.

1)      Turn your phone or tablet off at certain hours, like when you are at work or after dinner until the morning. If this makes you uncomfortable and you want to have your phone on so you do not miss an important phone call or message, igamemom.com has a great list of apps that lock your phone and only let certain programs through.

2)      Delete Facebook  from your phone or tablet. I can to say this enough to everyone I meet. You will notice such a feeling of freedom and relief after you do this. You can still access it occasionally on your phone through web application or on your desktop or laptop. After a few days of not receiving notifications on your phone you will forget about it. Trust me!

3)      Implement a no phone rule when you are with your friends or family. For the duration of your time together, no one can look at their phone unless there is an emergency or you are using it to get directions, etc. This has to be discussed and accepted by all parties and having other people involved makes it easier to keep yourself in check.

4)      Put your phone or tablet in the drawer which is farthest from your bed at bedtime. Not only will you not spend extra hours on nonsense browsing, when your alarm goes off in the morning you will have to get up and take it out of the drawer which will help you on your feet faster!

5)      Use a day planner or start a bullet journal. Important dates and work projects can be tracked online and must be for some points because of calendar sharing, especially if your family shares a google calendar (which I am totally for as I love how it keeps everyone on the same page). Once you start using a planner and making a habit of updating every day you will notice a big change in your productivity. Having your life organised in a notebook helps you really see what you need to do and how far you have come. Track everything in one place, instead of using 10 different apps and you will see screen time reduce and productivity increase after the first week!

Minimalism is the practical implementation of this quotation by Vernon Linwood Howard, an American philosopher and spiritual teacher. It is not imposed, but a deliberate and accepted way of living with minimum items that you really need, enjoy, and want to hold on to.

It is about purposefully getting rid of everything unnecessary or unwanted from your home and life. Minimalism intends to make life simpler and less chaotic, this is why minimalism is frequently called ‘simple living’.

It is about taking inventory of your life. I want to stay here for a moment and reflect on the word inventory as I believe this is really the key to any self change. Reaching that point where you realize you must take inventory of your life, choose the things that are essential and lose the things that are not, shows a mindset that is open, aware and intentional.

If you are reading this, you are probably either looking into, or have already made that mind state change. There are, of course, varying degrees of minimalism and on this blog I am going to share with you how I implement it in my life, how it has helped and inspired me to become a better and less stressed out person, wife and mother. I hope to inspire you and be your catalyst for change because I believe in you.

We are not talking about throwing out all of our things and living with the bare minimum. I want to show you how to, systematically, go through your house, and then your schedule, so to ‘trim the fat’.  To look at all of your things and tasks and choose what you love and is useful to you and part way with the rest. I want to help you to add purpose and meaning to your home and your days, to be less stressed ,and to feel like you really do have enough hours in the day to complete everything you want, and more!

Implementing this life change will require consistency and discipline. Small goals will turn into habits and once they become a part of your life, you will feel more at ease, happy and productive.  The mindfulness will lead to self-recognition where you will learn so much more about yourself than you ever knew. Why You Need To Free Yourself From Digital Clutter – Intentional Mindful Purposeful Living and Mothering

Look at a person’s computer desktop and that will describe to  you their state of mind?

What better place to start the process of simplification and decluttering than with our computers. After all, we look at for hours on end every day.  And let’s face it, neat and tidy digital space is great motivation to tackle your physical clutter!

With the availability of unlimited virtual space for data storage, digital clutter has become become a silent problem, sitting on our desktop and causing chaos when we turn on our screens. It occurs when we keep on storing the new files and media without getting rid of or organising old and obsolete data. Digital clutter is also known as digital hoarding or e-hoarding.

Just like physical clutter, digital clutter can be hectic, time consuming and irritating. You don’t put much physical effort in rummaging through digital files but, it requires more attention and presence of mind to deal with.  In order to search for a specific file or photo, one needs to dig it out through thousands of available files and photos, many of which that are incorrectly named or labeled.  There are software and applications which can facilitate the searching process but filtering search results is itself a frantic job, especially when you need something urgently.

The most common reason behind digital cluttering is the fear of losing something important or something of sentimental value. Just like with our physical property, fear of deleting files which might be needed in the future is what is causing us to hold on. Or,  the clutter is just so great, by the time you get around to organising it, the task is too overwhelming to start.

Digital Cluttering is inevitable, but can be managed. It is necessary to maintain your digital life just as it is you physical life. The key to conquering this is a implementing routine, or rhythm. Finished reading the email? Delete it or put it into a folder. Took 50 pictures at the park? Choose the best ones, send to computer (or hard drive)  and delete the rest. Just like your home, designate a space (program or folder) for each item. Every file should have a home and be accounted for. Once you get into the rhythm of doing this, it will become automatic and it does not take up more time. In fact, you will save time because you will know exactly where everything is.
